The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a renowned prophet on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting victims of more than ₦18 million under the guise of offering prayers, prophecies and spiritual assistance.
Arojah was arrested by operatives of the Ilaro Division following a complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun.”
According to the police, Akogun alerted authorities after members of the public began reporting fraudulent activities allegedly being carried out in his name through a duplicated Facebook account.
Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, Ilaro Division, deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track the suspected impersonator.
The police said sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis led investigators to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where the suspect was eventually apprehended.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating Prophet Akogun on Facebook and using the cleric’s identity to make fake prophecies and offer prayer services to individuals seeking spiritual assistance.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that the suspect allegedly targeted vulnerable individuals through the prophet’s Facebook page, gained their confidence and collected money from victims both within Nigeria and abroad.
The total amount allegedly obtained through the scheme has so far been put at more than ₦18 million.
The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The police said the investigation is expected to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify possible accomplices and establish the circumstances surrounding the transactions before prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro police operatives for their vigilance and swift response.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling cybercrime, identity theft and other forms of criminality across the state.
