The Ondo state Police command says it has deployed its armed men to beef up security in and around Emure road, Owo in Owo local government, the venue for the mass burial of victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Ondo State.
The mass burial which is expected to start by 10am will be attended by governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, other top government functionaries while religious leaders will be led by Bishop Jude Arogundade, Catholic Bishop, Diocese of Ondo.
Speaking with our correspondent, the PPRO, Mrs Funmi Odunlami said: “We have prepared to beef up security around the area during the burial. We are fully prepared. Some of our men have been deployed to the venue.
“People should not be afraid. They should just go about lawful duty and those who want to attend the burial should feel free to do so.”
On his part, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, in ondo state, Mr Aidamenbor Daniel said the corps had also deployed its men to the venue.
He said: “Though we have a national assignment coming up in Ekiti State tomorrow, that is Ekiti Election, men have been deployed to the state two days ago.
“But taking care of Owo incident, we have a divisional officer in Owo, so the officers and men in Owo are taking charge of the burial programme.”
The Catholic Diocese of Ondo had fixed Friday, June 17, 2022 for the mass burial of those who lost their lives in the terrorists attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo , Ondo State last week Sunday.
According to the church, no fewer than 40 people died in the attack while many others sustained injuries.
The Diocese’s Director of Social Communication, Rev. Fr. Augustine Ikwu, said the mass burial would take place at the church’s new cemetery at Emure Road, Owo.
“The mass burial would take place at the new cemetery of the church on Friday in Owo,” he said.
He maintained that the number of the deceased still remained 40.
It was gathered that the injured victims are still receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre and the St. Louis Catholic Hospital both in Owo and some other private hospitals in the state.
However, no one has been arrested in connection with the attack.
