FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPOINTS ELIZADE UNIVERSITY DEAN, ALICE OGUNDELE, AS CHAIRMAN OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL OF NIGERIA
The Federal Government has appointed renowned nurse educator, healthcare administrator, and academic, Dr. Alice Igbekeleoluwa Ogundele, as the new Chairman of the Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Dr. Ogundele, who currently serves as the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Elizade University, was formally inaugurated on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in Abuja by the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, during the inauguration of the newly constituted Board of the Council.
The appointment has been widely hailed as a recognition of Dr. Ogundele’s remarkable contributions to nursing practice, healthcare administration, professional development, and nursing education in Nigeria over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.
The Founder of Elizade University and Chairman Board of Trustees, Chief Michael Ade. Ojo, in a congratulatory message described her appointment as a fitting recognition of her wealth of experience, unwavering dedication to the nursing profession, and commitment to advancing healthcare standards in Nigeria.
With her assumption of office as Chairman of the Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Chief Ade. Ojo said expectations are high that her leadership will further strengthen professional regulation, nursing education, workforce development, and the delivery of quality healthcare services across the country.
The Vice-Chancellor of Elizade University, Professor Philip Oguntunde in a similar message said her appointment also represents a significant milestone for Elizade University, reinforcing the institution’s growing reputation for producing and attracting distinguished professionals who are making meaningful contributions to national development.
He said this is particularly gratifying as the University prepares for the commencement of its MBBS programme and just as the nation looks ahead to a new chapter in the governance of nursing and midwifery practice.
A respected scholar and healthcare leader, Dr. Ogundele brings over 32 years of extensive experience in clinical nursing, nursing education, research, and public health administration. Before joining academia full-time, she served as the Director of Nursing Services in Ondo State, where she played a transformative role in strengthening nursing manpower development and advancing healthcare delivery across the state.
Her academic credentials reflect a lifelong commitment to excellence. She earned a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1989 and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the same institution in 2010. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from National Open University of Nigeria and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Nursing from the University of the Western Cape. She is a Fellow of the West African College of Nurses and Midwives, one of the highest professional honours in nursing and midwifery practice in the region.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ogundele has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision. She previously served as Principal of the School of Midwifery, Akure, before rising to become Ondo State Director of Nursing Services. In that capacity, she championed policies and programmes aimed at enhancing the capacity of nursing professionals and improving healthcare outcomes.
Among her notable achievements was her commitment to sustaining post-basic nursing education even after the Ondo State School of Midwifery was integrated into the university system. She also spearheaded advocacy efforts for the training of community nurses and midwives, a strategic intervention that helped address the declining number of professional nurses serving at the Primary Health Care level.
Beyond administration, Dr. Ogundele has made significant scholarly contributions through research in Nursing Management, Human Resource Management, and Health Workforce Development. Her research findings have been published in reputable national and international journals, further cementing her reputation as an accomplished academic and thought leader.
