This was made known by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chief Oluwagbenga Akingbasote, in an interview with newsmen in Akure.
Chief Akingbasote, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner in the Ministry, Mr Sunday Olajide commended the state government for taking the bold step of approving the construction of the 2.38-kilometre flyover, which he said would significantly ease the persistent traffic congestion along the Alagbaka–Oba Adesida Road.
He said, “Flyovers are introduced to solve problems. For instance, the other flyover at Irese Road was constructed because a lot of accidents used to occur there, with our people getting involved in such unfortunate incidents while crossing the road. That was the reason the flyover was introduced by the late governor and completed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.”
He described the proposed flyover as a necessary intervention, given the persistent gridlock and intense economic activities along the road.
“For the proposed flyover, we all experience a lot of challenges as a result of the numerous activities along that axis. Some measures have been introduced several times. In fact, one of the past governors even created a designated area for taxis so that they would not stop on the road to pick up passengers, but it did not work.
“Task force officials keep arresting those bringing their wares onto the road to sell, but that did not work either. These measures are good, but when the population keeps increasing and the number of vehicles continues to rise, the best thing to do is to provide a lasting solution,” he said.
He added that the government has recognised that the flyover will allow motorists travelling from First Bank toward the Ilesha Motor Park to bypass the bustling Oja Oba market area entirely.
“That is why the government is saying that the volume of activities along that axis requires a flyover, so that vehicles coming all the way from First Bank can use the flyover when heading toward the Ilesha Motor Park instead of adding to the gridlock around the Oja Oba area.
“This is a good idea that requires extensive planning.”he said
Chief Akingbasote also praised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s giant strides across the state, emphasising that the state is currently undergoing a massive urban renewal drive, highlighted by extensive beautification projects across Akure and other major cities.
He noted “We can see a good number of urban renewal activities going on in the state. There is a lot of beautification taking place in Akure and other parts of the state. Some roundabouts have been converted into modern traffic-light intersections.
“The completion of the first overhead bridge in Akure is another notable achievement of Mr Governor. We can all see the dualisation and expansion of many roads in Akure and other cities across the state.”
